Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell if I’m getting a London licensed Private Hire Vehicle (PHV) and Private Hire Driver (PHD)?
The London PHV has distinctive blue discs on the top right-hand corner of the vehicle, front and back. The London PHD has a photographic ID badge showing their name, serial number and expiry date.
How can I be sure a London Private Hire Operator (PHO) is currently licensed?
Use the official Transport for London licensing checker.
What about taxis and private hire vehicles not licensed by TfL?
All will have licence plates near the rear number plate and drivers will carry ID badges. Across the UK, 335 local authorities are responsible for PHV licensing, with around 14,600 licensed operators outside London.
